I am a new resident to Cordova and found this site. Everything I hear from people and read about on local and national discussion boards (like city-data.com) is that people think Cordova is on the decline as it becomes annexed by Memphis. Among other complaints, people do not want Cordova schools to be taken over by Memphis city and don't want to pay city property taxes. Shouldn't there be some movement in place to just incorporate Cordova into its own city, like Bartlett and Germantown? I feel like I am missing something here, because it just seems like this would be such a logical step to take, especially so parents can keep their kids in Shelby County instead of Memphis city schools.

Cordova did try to incorporate back in the early 1980's and that is when the City cam out and began annexing the area. State law highly favors existing cities and towns and contains provisions for adjoining cities to stop areas from incorporating. Now that most of the area is in the City of Memphis we can not simply incorporate and withdraw from the City. It does take extra effort to deal with the city, but all citizen have a responsibility to work to make the community a better place and our schools better. Involvement is the key. Even if we were our own town, involvement would still be critical in making it work.
